Meet the people who make Tufts Medical Center Dermatology special

Our dermatology residency program is defined by the people who shape it—our curious, driven residents, our dedicated faculty and our accomplished alumni. Together, we form a supportive, inclusive and tight-knit community in the heart of Boston.

Residents at Tufts Medical Center come from across the country and bring a wide range of backgrounds and interests. They support each other through busy clinic days, challenging cases, board prep and career decisions. The bonds they form often last well beyond graduation.

Our faculty are leaders in medical, surgical, pediatric, cosmetic and dermatopathology. But what really sets them apart is their dedication to teaching and mentorship. They take the time to know each resident’s goals and guide them toward success—in the clinic, in research and in the next stage of their careers.

Our alumni go on to thrive in academic dermatology, private practice and advanced fellowships. Many continue to mentor residents, present at national conferences and stay connected to our Tufts Medical Center community.

We’re proud to be a smaller program where everyone knows your name and your interests. Here, you’ll get to lead, grow, and contribute meaningfully—all with the support of people who truly care.

More than a century of dermatology innovation + education at Tufts Medical Center

The Department of Dermatology at Tufts Medical Center has a rich academic and clinical history, rooted in more than a century of innovation, leadership and excellence in dermatologic care.

Founded in 1893, both the medical school and the dermatology department were originally located at Boston City Hospital and served as a primary teaching site for Tufts Medical Center (formerly New England Medical Center). Since then, the program has grown through the vision of nationally recognized leaders and a continued focus on advancing research, training and care.

Key milestones include:

  • 1944–1977: Drs. John Downing, Bernard Appel and Walter Lever helped shape modern dermatology at Tufts. Dr. Lever, a pioneer in blistering skin diseases, expanded the department’s research and education missions with strong NIH support.
  • 1980s–1990s: Dr. David Feingold built a robust academic program and oversaw the growth of clinical services, including the launch of a strong dermatologic surgery division under Dr. Donald Grande.
  • 2006–2016: Under the leadership of Dr. Alice Gottlieb, an expert in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, the department contributed to breakthrough immunobiologic research that led to FDA-approved treatments still in use today.
  • 2018–present: Dr. F. Clarissa Yang joined as Chair and Dermatologist-in-Chief, bringing a deep background in clinical leadership from Harvard. Known for her expertise in procedural dermatology and clinical care redesign, Dr. Yang continues to elevate the department's academic, clinical and educational missions.

Tufts Medical Center’s dermatology department remains one of the busiest in the region, with more than 13,000 outpatient visits annually and a reputation for excellent training, research and care.

From weekly lectures to national conferences, we prepare residents to become confident, collaborative and curious dermatologists who never stop learning. Our program emphasizes academic development, clinical reasoning and professional growth, on campus and across the country.

Didactics

We protect seven hours each week for formal didactics. These interactive, faculty-led sessions cover essential and advanced dermatology topics:

  • Basic science
  • Clinical core curriculum
  • Dermatopathology
  • Drugs in dermatology
  • Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) conference
  • Clinicopathologic correlation
  • Kodachromes and morphology
  • Neoplastic dermatology
  • Pediatric/genodermatoses (Hurwitz)
  • Procedural dermatology
  • Grand rounds
  • Journal club
  • Faculty-resident development lecture series

Conferences and lectures

We encourage residents to attend up to 8 days of conferences each year to present their work, build connections and engage with the latest research. Commonly attended meetings include:

  • American Academy of Dermatology (AAD): Annual spring meeting with opportunities to present posters and participate in gross & microscopic sessions
  • American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS): Focused on cutting-edge procedural techniques
  • Society for Pediatric Dermatology (SPD): Emphasizing care for young people with skin conditions

New England Dermatological Society

Tufts Medical Center actively participates in this regional collaboration with leading programs like Harvard, Yale, Brown and others. We host and attend three annual clinical meetings featuring live patients with rare conditions, expert panels and collaborative discussions that sharpen diagnostic skills and broaden exposure.

Dermatopathology

The VA and Tufts Medical Center offer comprehensive dermatopathology curricula, including lectures and slide reviews using multi-headed scopes as part of resident didactics. Inform DX also provides specialized dermatopathology training.

Electives

Second- and third-year residents have two weeks annually for electives, which have included clinical work in Boston and abroad, collaborations with local and national subspecialty experts and international experiences such as Botswana. There is also opportunity for specialized training with Dr. Razzaque Ahmed at the Center of Blistering Diseases, offering further exposure to rare autoimmune conditions and advanced patient care.

Pediatric dermatology

Residents at all levels participate in dedicated pediatric dermatology clinics at Tufts Medical Center. Second-year residents complete a pediatric inpatient consult rotation at Boston Children’s Hospital. Residents also evaluate pediatric consults from the Tufts emergency department and patients in the NICU during the consult rotation.
