Fellowship academic year + core conference schedule

The academic year begins with our foundational Summer Lecture Series, designed to equip new fellows with essential knowledge to start their training confidently. Following this, fellows lead two key conferences: Case Conference and Journal Club.

Throughout the year, additional conferences provide broad exposure to pulmonary and critical care medicine, including:

  • Morbidity and Mortality conference
  • Pulmonary Hypertension conference
  • Pathology conference
  • Tumor Board
  • Combined Rheumatology-Pulmonary ILD conference

These sessions enrich our fellow's learning and foster engagement with multidisciplinary teams.

Mentorship that supports your growth + success

We’re committed to helping each fellow reach their full potential. Mentorship is a cornerstone of our program, and every fellow is paired with dedicated mentors who provide guidance throughout training.

To make sure your experience is meeting your needs, we hold a monthly fellows meeting with the program director. This is a space to speak openly about all aspects of the program and share feedback.

When it’s time to focus on research, we’ll help you connect with faculty who share your interests. By the end of January in your first year, you’ll select a research project and mentor—so you can dive into your work at the start of your second year. Your mentor will continue to guide and support you through the remainder of your fellowship.

Training experience in pulmonology + critical care medicine

We believe strongly that experiential learning is a core part of our training. Our fellows are front and center in all patient care activities. When a patient is acutely ill on the medical floor or in the Emergency Room, fellows are the first to be notified and involved. This hands-on approach ensures they are fully integrated into the daily care team and gain real-world experience from the start.

Fellows are expected to take ownership of their education by making decisions at the bedside. This responsibility extends beyond critical care to pulmonary medicine and procedural training, promoting independence and confidence.

Our program also offers a robust didactic curriculum with multiple conference series, including Case Conference, Morbidity and Mortality, Journal Club, Pulmonary Hypertension, Rheumatology-Pulmonary ILD and Pathology Case Conference.

Bedside ultrasound skills are taught within the ICU to help fellows build their portfolios and prepare for critical care echocardiography board certification if they choose. Additionally, we host Boston’s city-wide introductory ultrasound course for new first-year trainees, fostering early mastery of this essential skill.
