Pulmonary + Critical Care Fellowship Program - Research Opportunities

Research Opportunities

Hands-on research experience for pulmonary + critical care fellows

We provide robust research training through our partnership with Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute. Fellows have the option to pursue a Master’s in Clinical and Translational Science, choosing from tracks like Clinical Discovery, Clinical Effectiveness Research, and Practice to Policy Research. Our program offers dedicated research time and strong faculty mentorship to help fellows develop skills essential for academic and clinical research careers.

Clinical research

Our clinical research program focuses on improving care for people with respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation, and pulmonary complications of systemic illness. Active studies include:

  • Stem Cell therapy in ARDS
  • Predictors of outcomes in mechanical ventilation and acute lung injury
  • Weaning and extubation protocols
  • Clinical outcomes of post-ICU clinic visits
  • Use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) to support weaning or prevent reintubation
  • Sedation practices in the ICU and their impact on outcomes

Industry-sponsored research

We are also engaged in several ongoing, industry-supported studies related to:

  • Monoclonal antibody guided thrombolysis in PE
  • Respiratory muscle stimulation in respiratory failure
  • Acute lung injury
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • COPD

Our fellows have the flexibility to pursue research aligned with their career goals, with strong mentorship from faculty across Tufts Medical Center and Tufts University School of Medicine.

Explore cutting-edge research opportunities + projects

Our division conducts active research in critical care, post-ICU recovery, pulmonary hypertension, and other key areas. Fellows gain hands-on experience participating in cutting-edge studies, supported by resources to present findings at conferences and publish scholarly work. These research opportunities prepare fellows to become leaders in pulmonary and critical care medicine.
