What to expect during the interview process

Qualified candidates will be invited to interview virtually with our faculty. We are confident that everyone invited to interview is an excellent candidate for our program, so the goal of the interview process is to help you understand whether the Tufts program is the right place for you. You will have the opportunity to discuss your background, interests, and how the Tufts program can help you achieve their career goals one-on-one with several faculty members. You will also have a chance to speak privately with one of our current fellows to hear about their experience.

Interviews are typically held in September and October. If you do not have the opportunity to speak with a particular faculty member on your interview day, we are happy to arrange an ad-hoc meeting. We are also happy to have you visit our program if you would like, though this is certainly not expected or required and will have no bearing on your position on our rank list.

Advancing heart failure care through clinical trials + outcomes research

Tufts Medical Center has a rich history of research and innovation. We were high enrollers in the Medtronic HVAD clinical trial and was the first center in New England to implant the novel Evaheart 2 LVAD. We are also a clinical site in the INNOVATE clinical trial of the BrioVAD. Tufts Medical Center is the founding member of the Cardiogenic Shock Working Group, which continues to drive innovation in cardiogenic shock diagnosis, management, and outcomes research worldwide. Faculty at Tufts Medical Center participate in several other investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored studies, and we have a robust internal transplant and LVAD database used for quality improvement and clinical research.

For incoming fellows looking for a basic science research experience, Tufts Medical Center houses the Molecular Cardiology Research Institute (MCRI). With more than 25 years of pioneering discovery, the MCRI unites 12 principal investigators and over 40 researchers and trainees across three centers: the Cardiac Biology Research Center, the Vascular Biology Research Center, and the Center for Translational Pharmacology and Genomics. Fellows can pursue projects spanning the full translational spectrum, from molecular mechanisms of heart attack, hypertension, heart failure, and arrhythmia to drug and device development, cardio-oncology, sex differences in cardiovascular disease, and biobank-driven genetic studies, with a clear pathway to multicenter clinical trials born from MCRI discoveries.

In addition, fellows are expected to present once at Cardiology Division Conference and at Morbidity and Mortality conferences within the Heart Transplant and LVAD programs.
