Dear prospective residents,

I’m excited to serve as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Tufts Medical Center and Tufts University School of Medicine. Our general surgery residency program is thriving and internationally recognized for providing exceptional clinical and scientific training in a welcoming, supportive environment.

Our program offers broad clinical education, including surgical critical care, advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery, as well as thoracic, colorectal, breast, endocrine and plastic surgery, in addition to solid organ transplantation.

Our residents enjoy weekly protected didactic time, which includes simulation training in a new, state-of-the-art facility. Our board passage rates exceed 90%. We have a flexible research approach and encourage residents to follow their passions as they develop their careers.

Our residents routinely match into some of the most competitive post-residency positions or fellowships, including pediatrics, plastics and minimally invasive surgery.

Comprehensive general surgery residency training at Tufts Medical Center with supportive faculty

The General Surgery Residency at Tufts Medical Center offers a dynamic, hands-on training experience in a supportive and collaborative environment. As a 5-year ACGME-accredited program, Tufts Medical Center is committed to developing skilled, compassionate surgeons ready for diverse surgical careers. Residents train in a high-volume setting, gaining experience with a wide range of cases—from routine surgeries to complex trauma and advanced minimally invasive procedures.

Our graduates consistently match into competitive fellowships across specialties like plastic surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical oncology and minimally invasive surgery. Others enter clinical practice well prepared to lead in a variety of settings. Residents are encouraged to participate in research alongside faculty experts, with access to cutting-edge simulation labs and opportunities for presentations and publications, building a foundation in surgical science and innovation.

At Tufts Medical Center, residents are integral members of a close-knit team where strong mentorship and collaboration are core values. The small program size fosters close relationships between faculty and trainees, supporting both professional growth and personal wellness. We prioritize resident wellbeing through mental health resources, mentorship and initiatives that promote work-life balance throughout training.

Residents rotate through specialized services at our Level I trauma center and affiliated community hospitals, benefiting from interdisciplinary collaboration and hands-on simulation-based training. Tufts Medical Center is also dedicated to fostering an inclusive learning environment that values diversity and cultural competence, reflecting our commitment to equity in surgical care and education.

Our commitment to your academic success

Our program offers a highly structured academic curriculum designed to help residents excel no matter their career goals. Weekly didactics follow the Surgical Council on Resident Education (SCORE) curriculum, contributing to our history of high board passage rates on both the written and oral American Board of Surgery exams.

Simulation is a cornerstone of our education, featuring advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery labs that help residents build confidence and technical skill.

Many residents pursue research fellowships at Tufts Medical Center or leading Boston institutions like Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. Others take this time to earn advanced degrees such as a Master of Public Health.

Our graduates consistently secure competitive fellowships and go on to serve as surgical attendings at top academic medical centers nationwide.
