How to apply to the Physical Medicine + Rehabilitation Residency at Tufts Medical Center

All applications must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

If you need help using ERAS or accessing a student workstation, please contact your medical school’s Dean’s Office. International medical graduates should reach out to the ECFMG.

Application requirements

To be considered, we must receive the following by October 1, 2025:

  • Minimum of three letters of recommendation (at least one from a physiatrist strongly recommended)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Personal statement
  • Medical school transcript
  • Dean’s letter
  • USMLE or COMLEX Steps 1 & 2 results (must be passed on the first attempt)

Graduation from medical school must be within the last three years. We do not review applications missing any of the above documents.

Interview format: All interviews will be held virtually.

NRMP: Applicants must also register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for PGY-2 positions in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Physical Medicine + Rehabilitation residency rotations + clinical training at Tufts Medical Center

A primary focus of our Physical Medicine + Rehabilitation Residency program is one-on-one training with expert faculty across diverse clinical settings, each providing unique educational opportunities. Our experienced physiatrists serve as dedicated mentors, guiding residents through hands-on learning in both inpatient and outpatient care, including procedural training at several private practice locations.

Our residents rotate through multiple premier sites, building expertise across the full spectrum of rehabilitation medicine. A sample rotation schedule includes:

  • Tufts Medical Center: Adult and pediatric rehabilitation, outpatient clinics, inpatient consultations, and electrodiagnosis in the Department of Neurology
  • Boston VA Healthcare System: Musculoskeletal and sports medicine, spinal cord injury
  • Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of New England: Stroke, brain injury, general medical rehabilitation, and spasticity management
  • Boston Children’s Hospital: Pediatric physiatry

Throughout these rotations, residents gain hands-on training in a wide range of core subspecialties, including:

At Tufts Medical Center, our Physical Medicine + Rehabilitation Residency program offers residents a diverse, hands-on training experience designed to prepare them for all aspects of physiatry.   • Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital, focused on specialized inpatient rehab care
  • New England Spine Center, emphasizing musculoskeletal and interventional spine therapies
  • Boston Children’s Hospital, where residents develop skills in pediatric rehabilitation

Residents receive close mentorship through one-on-one teaching with attending physiatrists, ensuring personalized guidance and professional growth. The program’s broad clinical rotations cover core areas such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, spasticity management, interventional pain, sports medicine, electrodiagnostics and amputee care.

In addition to clinical skills, residents gain experience with ultrasound-guided procedures, orthotics and prosthetics, and multidisciplinary teamwork. This comprehensive approach equips our graduates with the confidence and knowledge to excel in academic or clinical practice settings.

Training future leaders in Physical Medicine + Rehabilitation at Tufts Medical Center in Boston

The Tufts Medical Center Physical Medicine + Rehabilitation Residency program is a three-year, ACGME-accredited advanced training program designed to prepare physicians to become skilled physiatrists. Each year, we accept three candidates through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP), allowing for personalized, focused training.

Our program provides an exceptionally well-rounded education to equip residents for careers in either academic medicine or clinical practice. A key strength is the one-on-one training with expert faculty across diverse clinical settings, each offering unique learning opportunities. Residents rotate through leading Boston-area institutions, including Tufts Medical Center, VA Boston Healthcare System, Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital, New England Spine Center and Boston Children’s Hospital.

Throughout the residency, trainees gain hands-on experience in a broad range of core subspecialties. These include stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, general acute inpatient rehabilitation, spasticity management, pediatric rehabilitation, interventional pain, musculoskeletal and ultrasound-guided procedures, adult and pediatric sports medicine, electrodiagnostics, neurology, orthopedics, amputee medicine and orthotics and prosthetics.

This diverse exposure, combined with close mentorship, prepares our residents to confidently lead rehabilitation care teams and advance the field of physiatry in a variety of settings.
