Comprehensive training experience in Physical Medicine + Rehabilitation at Tufts Medical Center

At Tufts Medical Center, our Physical Medicine + Rehabilitation Residency program offers residents a diverse, hands-on training experience designed to prepare them for all aspects of physiatry. Over three years, residents rotate through multiple premier clinical sites, gaining expertise across the full spectrum of rehabilitation medicine, and participate in weekly didactic conferences and other presentations.

Our training includes rotations at:

  • Tufts Medical Center, providing a busy academic hospital environment with acute inpatient rehab
  • VA Boston Healthcare System, offering exposure to veteran populations and complex rehab cases
  • Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital, focused on specialized inpatient rehab care
  • Boston Children’s Hospital, where residents develop skills in pediatric rehabilitation

Residents receive close mentorship through one-on-one teaching with attending physiatrists, ensuring personalized guidance and professional growth. The program’s broad clinical rotations cover core areas such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, spasticity management, interventional pain, sports medicine, electrodiagnostics and amputee care.

In addition to clinical skills, residents gain experience with ultrasound-guided procedures, orthotics and prosthetics, and multidisciplinary teamwork. This comprehensive approach equips our graduates with the confidence and knowledge to excel in academic or clinical practice settings.

Training future leaders in Physical Medicine + Rehabilitation at Tufts Medical Center in Boston

The Tufts Medical Center Physical Medicine + Rehabilitation Residency program is a three-year, ACGME-accredited advanced training program designed to prepare physicians to become skilled physiatrists. Each year, we accept three candidates through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP), allowing for personalized, focused training.

Our program provides an exceptionally well-rounded education to equip residents for careers in either academic medicine or clinical practice. A key strength is the one-on-one training with expert faculty across diverse clinical settings, each offering unique learning opportunities. Residents rotate through leading Boston-area institutions, including Tufts Medical Center, VA Boston Healthcare System, Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital, New England Spine Center and Boston Children’s Hospital.

Throughout the residency, trainees gain hands-on experience in a broad range of core subspecialties. These include stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, general acute inpatient rehabilitation, spasticity management, pediatric rehabilitation, interventional pain, musculoskeletal and ultrasound-guided procedures, adult and pediatric sports medicine, electrodiagnostics, neurology, orthopedics, amputee medicine and orthotics and prosthetics.

This diverse exposure, combined with close mentorship, prepares our residents to confidently lead rehabilitation care teams and advance the field of physiatry in a variety of settings.

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program at Tufts Medical Center is a three-year Advanced, ACGME-accredited residency. Pathology Residency - How to Apply

How to apply to the Pathology Residency Program at Tufts Medical Center

We welcome your interest in our four-year, ACGME-accredited Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency Program. All applications must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), and applicants must also register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

Below are the eligibility requirements, application materials, and important timelines to help guide your submission.

Eligibility requirements

  • ERAS application: We only accept applications through ERAS. Visit www.aamc.org to register.
  • NRMP registration: You must be registered with the NRMP by the match deadline. Learn more at www.nrmp.org.
  • Medical school education: You must be a graduate of an AMA- and Massachusetts BORIM-approved medical school, within eight years of graduation.
  • USMLE scores: While we do not require a minimum score, we generally do not interview applicants who have failed any step.
    • Step 1 must be completed to be considered.
    • Steps 2 CK and 2 CS must be completed before starting residency for licensure.
  • International medical graduates:
    • Must apply through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), which processes international applications through ERAS.
    • Tufts Medical Center sponsors only J-1 visas. H-1B sponsorship is rare and considered only in exceptional cases.
    • Preferably have at least one year of U.S. clinical or research experience.

  • ERAS Common Application Form
  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Medical school transcript
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE or Dean’s Letter)
  • Three letters of recommendation (at least one must be from a pathology faculty member)
  • Personal statement
  • USMLE Step scores

Interview process

  • Interviews are conducted from November through January.
  • Invitations are sent on a rolling basis from October through December via email.
  • Applicants not selected for an interview will also be notified through ERAS.
