About the neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship program at Tufts Medical Center

The Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship at Tufts Medical Center provides a dynamic and comprehensive training experience designed to prepare physicians for leadership roles in clinical care, research and medical education. Our program immerses fellows in the full spectrum of neonatal care, from managing high-risk deliveries and complex critical illnesses to long-term follow-up of high-risk infants.

With a high-acuity, 40-bed Level III NICU and access to a broad regional hospital network, fellows gain hands-on experience caring for a diverse patient population with a wide range of medical and surgical needs. The program also includes valuable rotations at Boston Children’s Hospital and the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, further expanding clinical exposure.

Beyond clinical excellence, our fellowship emphasizes scholarly development, offering extensive research opportunities through collaborations with the Woman, Mother and Baby Research Institute, the Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute and the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences. Fellows receive tailored mentorship and participate in a structured scholarly curriculum to support their individual academic goals.

Interventional cardiology research opportunities at Tufts Medical Center

Research is an important part of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Tufts Medical Center. Fellows are encouraged to get involved early and have access to a wide range of research experiences—from basic science to large clinical trials.

Hands-on from the start

Fellows are active contributors to clinical research throughout the year. With support from expert mentors like Drs. Kimmelstiel, Weintraub and Kapur, fellows are guided through the process of designing studies, writing abstracts and publishing papers.

National clinical trials

Tufts MC has a long history of leading and participating in major device trials, especially drug-eluting stents. We’re also involved in trials beyond coronary interventions, including peripheral and structural heart studies. Our fellows actively participate in high-profile studies like the RESPECT trial, which looks at PFO closure for stroke prevention.

Homegrown studies

We also run many single-center studies led by our own investigators. Topics include platelet function during PCI, kidney protection during contrast procedures and the use of pharmacologic therapies. Fellows help design, carry out and analyze these projects.

Specialized research opportunities

Our Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center offers studies focused on alcohol septal ablation and other physiologic approaches to HCM. Fellows collaborate closely with the heart failure team on these efforts.

Clinical opportunities during the interventional cardiology fellowship

By the end of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Tufts Medical Center, fellows develop the knowledge, skills and hands-on experience needed to practice confidently as interventional cardiologists.

Throughout the program, fellows take on increasing responsibility for patient care and procedures under expert supervision. This ensures they build the expertise required for independent practice. Fellows will:

• Understand when and when not to perform percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), including optimal care before and after PCI
• Learn radiological imaging principles for the heart and lungs, with a focus on radiation safety
• Gain proficiency in performing PCI on major coronary arteries and branches
• Develop skills to interpret images and hemodynamic tracings during PCI, contributing to multidisciplinary decision-making
• Recognize and manage both common and rare PCI complications and engage in peer review of adverse events
• Master the use of interventional devices such as balloons, stents, atherectomy tools, intracoronary brachytherapy, distal protection devices, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), percutaneous thrombectomy and lasers
• Apply interventional techniques for valvular heart disease, including percutaneous valvuloplasty for mitral and aortic stenosis
• Use interventional methods to treat congenital heart defects like patent foramen ovale and atrial septal defect closures
• Understand when to perform percutaneous transeptal myocardial ablation for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
• Evaluate and treat patients with peripheral vascular disease

Gain expertise in advanced procedures including endomyocardial biopsy, invasive management of decompensated heart failure, vasodilator and inotrope hemodynamic studies, IVUS for transplant arteriopathy, high-risk PCI in advanced ischemic cardiomyopathy, and the use of percutaneous ventricular assist devices for ventricular support and with surgical LVADs

Hands-on interventional cardiology training in the heart of Boston

Fellows in our Interventional Cardiology Fellowship receive hands-on, high-volume training in one of Boston’s busiest academic medical centers. From day one, fellows are treated as essential members of the care team and take on growing responsibility under the guidance of experienced interventional cardiologists.

You’ll spend the majority of your time in our three advanced catheterization labs, where you’ll perform a wide range of procedures including coronary interventions, peripheral vascular procedures and selected structural heart interventions. You’ll also provide clinical care for patients before and after procedures, developing strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills.

In addition to procedural training, the fellowship includes:

• Daily case-based learning and imaging review
• Weekly didactics, journal clubs and multidisciplinary conferences
• One-on-one teaching from faculty with diverse interventional backgrounds
• Exposure to high-risk PCI, complex coronary disease and advanced support devices

The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Tufts Medical Center is a one-year, ACGME-accredited program designed to prepare cardiovascular specialists for advanced interventional careers.
