Internal Medicine Residency Program – Life + Wellness in Boston

Life + Wellness in Boston
Internal Medicine Residency at Tufts Medical Center, 2026

Living in Boston

Boston is a vibrant city that is full of history. Walking along the streets of Boston (we recommend a walk along the Freedom Trail), you can still visit many of the city’s famous landmarks. Boston is also home to a wide number of universities and major healthcare institutions. In fact, the city has the nation’s highest concentration of colleges, with many alumni who stay after graduation to work and live in the city.

Tufts Medical Center is nestled in the vibrant Chinatown neighborhood and right next door to the theater district which allows for many opportunities to catch a concert, play, ballet, or comedy show. If that’s not your jam, Boston also hosts several major sports teams including the Celtics, Bruins, Patriots and Red Sox if you want to catch a game. Beyond that, there are hundreds of incredible restaurants to try, nature walks to stroll, and plenty of beautiful areas to explore in the greater Boston area.

Most of our residents currently live around the hospital in the Chinatown and South End neighborhoods, but the hospital is also easily accessible by the MBTA Orange, Red and Green lines and many residents take advantage of this to live across the city’s many unique neighborhoods like Jamaica Plain, the North End or neighborhoods across the river throughout Cambridge and Somerville.

Resident wellness

At Tufts Medical Center’s Internal Medicine Residency, we recognize that medical training can often be demanding and stressful and our program places a lot of emphasis on fostering a healthy work-life balance for our residents. We offer a diverse range of activities and programs aimed at nurturing physical, mental and emotional well-being. Daily lunch is provided by the program during the weekdays for our residents. Our residents also have access to dedicated therapists, psychiatrists and primary care physicians at Tufts Medical Center with appointments available at short notice. Our hospital is located right across the street from the Chinatown YMCA, where residents can enjoy a discounted rate for monthly gym memberships. There are also numerous resident-run pick-up basketball group chats, intramural sports, and resident book clubs.

Additionally, we organize numerous social events at local restaurants, sports events, and have picnics in the numerous green public spaces around Boston. These events are usually centered around our “switch days” to mark the end of a rotation block for the residents.

Our neighborhood

We share the Tufts Medical Center campus with several Tufts University science and professional schools, including the Tufts University School of Medicine. Residents get a variety of teaching opportunities with medical students because of this, including leading small group learning sessions, physical diagnosis teaching and running morning reports.
