Application information

Applicants to our Categorical Internal Medicine Residency Program must apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). All internship positions are offered exclusively through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

Please note: we do not offer a one-year preliminary medicine program.

Signaling

Applicants are strongly encouraged to utilize ERAS signaling to demonstrate a specific interest in our program. Signal preferences will be incorporated as an important part of our holistic review. Although sending a signal will not guarantee an interview, due to a high volume of applicants, we are very unlikely to interview applicants who do not signal our program.

Geographic preferences

In addition to program signals, we view a geographic preference for our region – or selecting no geographic preference – as an additional indicator of potential interest in Tufts Medical Center Residency Program. 

Interviews

Invitations to interviews are extended on a rolling basis via email through ERAS between October and the end of December. Applicants who are not selected for an interview will also be notified via ERAS email.

U.S. Graduates

  • Three letters of recommendation, including one from the Chair of the Department of Medicine or designee
  • Passing USMLE Step 1 and 2 are required at the time of your interview
International Medical Graduates

In addition to the application requirements listed for U.S. Graduates (above), international medical graduates must meet the following criteria:

  • Completion of at least two months of clinical rotations in the United States involving direct patient care responsibilities (observerships do not meet this requirement)
  • Two letters of recommendation must be from clinical supervisors within the United States
  • USMLE Step 2 score 
  • Medical school graduation date must be within four years of the start of the internship, unless the applicant has been enrolled in a U.S.-based clinical fellowship or residency program
  • Applicants must be eligible for a J-1 visa sponsored by the ECFMG. Tufts Medical Center does not sponsor H-1b visas, except for applicants who are already on a clinical H-1b visa
