Hematology + Oncology Fellowship Program - Training Experience

Training Experience

Advanced training in hematology + oncology in Boston

The Tufts Medical Center Hematology + Oncology Fellowship Program is an ACGME-accredited, three-year combined program offering comprehensive training in all aspects of hematology and oncology. Since the 1940s, the Division has emphasized rigorous clinical instruction and research training within a strong academic environment. For over 60 years, we have trained fellows who now hold leadership roles in academic medicine, research, healthcare systems and industry across the United States and internationally.

The program also includes a regular rotation of undergraduates, medical students and residents, enriching the learning environment and fostering a culture of education across all levels.

Structured, immersive training experience

The fellowship integrates hematology and medical oncology, preparing physicians for board certification in both subspecialties. The curriculum is designed to support careers in academic medicine, clinical practice, or research leadership.

Clinical training

In the first year, fellows complete intensive outpatient training through subspecialty clinics covering:

  • Benign and malignant hematology
  • Breast, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynecologic, neurologic, thoracic and head and neck oncology

Fellows also complete a required 2-month community oncology rotation at Lowell General Hospital, part of the Tufts Medicine health system, which includes multiple hospitals such as MelroseWakefield Hospital and Metro-West Hospital. This rotation provides valuable experience in multidisciplinary care outside of a tertiary academic center.

The second and third years include advanced inpatient rotations, including:

  • Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
  • Inpatient consultative services
  • Palliative care

Research + academic development

A major focus of the second and third years is mentored research. Fellows engage in clinical or basic science projects with the goal of contributing to peer-reviewed scholarship. A robust didactic curriculum complements clinical training and includes:

  • Case-based learning and multidisciplinary tumor boards
  • Journal clubs and evidence-based medicine
  • Training in clinical trial design, quality improvement and teaching methodology

Fellows are also encouraged to participate in national conferences and present original research.

Outcomes + career preparation

Graduates are exceptionally well prepared for board certification in hematology and medical oncology. Our alumni pursue diverse career paths, including:

  • Academic faculty positions
  • Clinical and translational research
  • Leadership roles in healthcare systems, biotech, and pharmaceutical industries

The program fosters academic excellence through interdisciplinary collaboration, scientific inquiry and a commitment to advancing the field of hematology and oncology.
