Transforming behavioral healthcare in Greater Boston

We’re building a new place for healing, right here in our community.

Opening in the first quarter of 2026 in Malden, Massachusetts, our new modern behavioral health hospital will make it easier for the community to access high-quality behavioral health care.

Tufts Medicine and Acadia Healthcare have joined forces to build a 144-bed hospital on the site of the former Malden Hospital. The hospital will offer inpatient care and intensive outpatient programs for all ages, close to home. Whether someone is facing a crisis or managing ongoing challenges, we’re here to provide caring, expert support in a place built for healing.

What makes this hospital different?

This new hospital will be more than just a place to receive care — it’s a destination for healing and innovation, built to meet the growing behavioral health needs of our communities.

  • Center of excellence: Designed to deliver the highest quality behavioral healthcare, rooted in the expertise of Tufts Medicine and Acadia Healthcare.
  • Care for all ages: Services for children, adolescents, adults and older adults.
  • Team-based approach: Skilled care teams include psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, therapists and more, all working together.
  • Modern facility: Thoughtfully designed spaces promote safety, comfort and dignity.
  • Academic partnership: As a teaching site for Tufts University School of Medicine, we’re helping build the behavioral health workforce Massachusetts needs.

From blueprint to reality: Building our new hospital

Building on a legacy of care to support our communities

The new hospital builds on a long-standing commitment to behavioral health in our region. By bringing services together in one location, we’re able to improve access, offer more specialized care and expand the range of programs available to communities across Greater Boston — including Malden, Medford, Melrose and beyond.

We’re also giving back to the community by preserving more than 9 acres of green space for public use and conservation — a lasting benefit for our neighbors.
