Tufts Medical Center Welcomes Dr. James Pomposelli as Chief of Abdominal Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery

James Pomposelli, MD, PhD, FACS, a global expert in liver transplant surgery, has joined Tufts Medical Center as the Chief of Abdominal Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery

In his role as Division Chief, Dr. Pomposelli will foster interdisciplinary collaboration to expand the abdominal transplant program and provide mentorship to faculty, fellows, and residents. He will work closely with Tufts Medical Center leadership and key stakeholders across Tufts Medicine entities to enhance access to care, optimize quality, and support innovative research and academic excellence in abdominal transplant and hepatobiliary surgery.

His expertise and commitment to research and mentorship benefit our patients and elevate the academic and clinical standards of our institution.”

Dr. Pomposelli joins Tufts Medicine from University of Colorado Health, where he served as the Surgical Director of Abdominal Transplantation and Professor of Surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Under his leadership, the program achieved outstanding performance and international recognition. Prior to this, he worked at Lahey Clinic, where his leadership significantly grew the program, and is recognized as the most experienced living donor liver transplant surgeon in the country.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Pomposelli has demonstrated exceptional leadership in surgical clinical quality, academic excellence, and program development. He has served as Chair of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) Liver and Intestine Committee, current Chair of the UNOS National Liver Review Board (NLRB), Councilor of the International Liver Transplant.
