Tufts Medical Center Liver Transplant Program Achieves CMS Certification

July 31, 2025

The Tufts Medical Center Liver Transplant Program has officially received certification from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)—a major milestone that affirms the strength, quality and accessibility of our liver transplant services.

This federal certification is awarded to programs that meet rigorous standards in clinical outcomes, program infrastructure, multidisciplinary expertise, and ongoing quality improvement. It reinforces our unwavering commitment to delivering safe, effective and equitable care for patients with advanced liver disease across New England and beyond.

“CMS certification is not just a regulatory achievement—it’s a powerful recognition of the outstanding care we provide,” said James Pomposelli, MD, PhD, Surgical Director of Liver Transplantation. “It reflects the strength of our entire team and opens the door for more patients, including those with Medicare or Medicaid, to access life-saving liver transplant care.”

“This milestone allows us to expand services to more patients across our region,” added Fredric Gordon, MD, Medical Director of Liver Transplantation. “It speaks to the expertise of our program and our dedication to offering high-quality, compassionate care—especially to those who may have previously faced barriers to treatment.”

With CMS certification, Tufts Medical Center can now care for a broader range of patients and ensuring timely access to transplant evaluation, surgery and post-operative care for individuals in need, including those referred from community hospitals and hepatology practices.

We thank our patients, referring physicians and the exceptional team members across Tufts Medical Center who made this achievement possible. Together, we are advancing the future of liver transplantation and redefining what’s possible for people living with liver disease.
