Through APKD’s national matching system, incompatible donor-recipient pairs are matched with other pairs across the country, significantly increasing the likelihood of transplantation and reducing time spent on dialysis. In 2024 alone, APKD facilitated more than 250 kidney exchanges nationwide.
“Joining the Alliance for Paired Kidney Donation is an important step forward in our commitment to expanding access to advanced transplant care,” said Sharon Klarman, Executive Director of Solid Organ Transplant. “By connecting our patients to a national network of living donors, we are increasing opportunities for life-saving kidney transplants while strengthening protections and support for those generous individuals who choose to donate.”
Participation in APKD also provides access to DonorProtect®, a comprehensive program that offers financial and logistical safeguards for living donors—reinforcing Tufts Medical Center’s longstanding commitment to donor safety and reducing barriers to donation.
This achievement reflects coordinated collaboration across the transplant program, including transplant surgeons and physicians, nurse coordinators, the HLA laboratory, operational and IT teams, revenue cycle and administrative leadership. It underscores Tufts Medical Center’s role as a destination center for complex and innovative transplant care and advances Tufts Medicine’s broader mission to deliver high-quality, equitable care to the communities we serve.
