Year Measure first Published: 2017

About This Measure

Categorical scoring: Yes
Scoring categories: To generate a score for each factor and / or an overall score for health literacy, the weights must be multiplied by the response values obtained on each of the items to be summed.

About the Validation of this Measure

Country where validated: Brazil
Content validity: Following the steps for the assessment of semantic equivalence, the questionnaire was independently translated from the original English to Portuguese version by three health professionals and fluent in the English language. The three versions were compared and discussed by the professionals until the construction of a common version that was evaluated by a fourth health professional. This latest version was back-translated by another bilingual professional, who did not have access to the original version, and was then presented to the authors of the original scale for consideration. The pretest was performed with Brazilian university students (n = 10), who were not part of the final study sample.
Reliability (Cronbach Alpha): 0.72
Reliability notes: With the exception of the BIS factor (CCBIS = 0.71 and αBIS = 0.71), the values of standardized Cronbach's α coefficients and CC to evaluate the internal consistency of each factor were below the recommended: EIS = 0.59 and αEIS = 0.55); CCS (CCCCS = 0.41 and αCCS = 0.40) and IS (CCIS = 0.43 and αIS = 0.42). On the other hand, the internal consistency for the totality of the items evaluated by the stratified α and the total CC was adequate (αTOTAL = 0.74, CCTOTAL = 0.83). Thus, the overall internal consistency was considered adequate when α ≥ 0.70.
