About the Validation of this Measure

Additional Notes: No validation studies have been identified for this measure of Organizational Health Literacy. We feel this tool may still be a helpful resource. Note: other measures of Organizational Health Literacy in the Tool Shed do have information on their validation and links to published validation studies. Please let us know if we have missed studies for this measure so we can update this entry. Split into three parts: Part I is the Pharmacy Assessment Tour. Evaluates promotion of services, print materials, and clear verbal communication. Can be completed in 20-30 by at least 2 trained auditors. Consists of 36 items answered on a 1-3 scale, and 5 items answered as Yes/No. Part II is the Health Literacy Assessment Survey of Pharmacy Staff. Consists of four sections, including print materials, clear verbal communication, sensitivity to literacy, and personal information. Has 67 items (not including personal information), and takes about 20 minutes to complete. All items answered on a 1-3 scale. Part III is Patient Focus Groups. Evaluates physical environment, care process and workforce, paperwork and written communication, and culture. Each focus group should take about 2 hours to complete. Scoring for Parts I and II: 1 = This is something the pharmacy does not appear to be doing. 2 = The pharmacy is doing this but could make some improvements. 3 = The pharmacy is doing this well. N/A = Not applicable.
