Otolaryngology resident conferences + learning schedule

Our residency program offers a rich schedule of conferences, courses and meetings designed to deepen your clinical knowledge and support your professional growth.

Weekly conference schedule

• 6–7 a.m. Inpatient rounds
• 7:30–8 a.m. Mock oral board exam: attending vs resident
• 8–9 a.m. Head and neck radiology conference
• 1–2 p.m. Multidisciplinary head and neck tumor conference
• 2–3 p.m. Audiology and speech-language pathology lectures (junior residents)
• 4–6 p.m. Didactic series lectures (with Boston University Otolaryngology residents)

Course schedules

Our residents benefit from a range of specialized courses designed to build foundational knowledge and advanced skills throughout training.

• Introduction to otolaryngology/crash course: Held during the first week of PGY-2, this intensive 3-hour daily course covers 15 fundamental topics including trauma management, epistaxis, airway obstruction and advanced exam skills. It’s taught jointly with the BU otolaryngology program and highly valued by junior residents.
• Didactic series course: A year-long series of weekly Wednesday lectures covering clinical and basic science topics such as head and neck cancer, otology, plastics and trauma, laryngology, pediatrics and rhinology. Sessions also prepare residents for the in-service exam with focused reviews.
• Anatomy and temporal bone dissection course: Running December through January, this lab course meets weekly for 3 hours. Labs alternate between temporal bone dissection at Boston Medical Center and gross anatomy at Tufts University School of Medicine. Junior and senior residents attend separate labs to maximize learning and individual attention.
• Audiology + speech-language pathology course: Junior residents attend weekly lectures throughout the year provided by the Tufts Medical Center Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology team. Topics include physics of sound, tympanometry, otoacoustic emissions, ABR testing and dysphagia evaluation.

Grand rounds

Held on select Wednesdays, grand rounds feature distinguished leaders in otolaryngology and related specialties. Residents present at clinical pathologic conferences (CPC) and participate in quarterly morbidity and mortality meetings.

Visiting professor series

In partnership with Boston University Otolaryngology, this series invites esteemed otolaryngology experts to share knowledge and engage with residents.

Meetings

Residents attend at least one regional or national meeting annually. The New England Otolaryngology Society meeting is expected three times a year. Residents are also encouraged and supported to attend Eastern Section meetings, COSM and the annual AAO-HNS meetings.

Train at leading pediatric, community + private ENT practices

Our otolaryngology residency offers diverse affiliate rotations that provide broad clinical experience across some of the region’s top hospitals and practices. These rotations expose residents to a wide range of adult and pediatric cases, high surgical volume and expert mentorship in academic, community and private practice settings. Through this variety, residents develop the skills and confidence needed for a successful career in any otolaryngology pathway.

• Boston Children’s Hospital is a premier tertiary referral center for pediatric care. Our residents train alongside peers from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Boston University Otolaryngology programs. This rotation offers rich exposure to pediatric otolaryngology and head and neck surgery cases under internationally renowned specialists. Call is in-house with a 1:4 schedule.
• At the ENT Specialists Group, residents gain valuable experience in a busy private otolaryngology practice. This rotation highlights the relationship between private practice, community care and academic medicine, helping residents make informed career decisions. Surgical volume and case diversity are high, and residents earn increased autonomy in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Call is home-based, covering two weekends per month with no weekday call.
• Residents also rotate in Providence, Rhode Island, primarily at Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital, as well as Women & Infants Hospital. These regional tertiary referral centers offer robust clinical exposure. Two to three residents rotate here at once, working closely with dedicated otolaryngology PAs, medical students from Brown University’s Alpert Medical School and PA students from Bryant University. The rotation includes inpatient care, OR cases, and several outpatient clinics weekly in general ENT, otology, head and neck, and pediatrics. Home call is taken from a provided apartment minutes from the hospital.
• Tufts Medical Center is the primary teaching hospital for the residency program. It includes a 415-bed adult hospital and a 128-bed pediatric hospital and serves as a major tertiary referral center for Rhode Island, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire. Residents gain extensive clinical and surgical training here, with home call duties.

Comprehensive clinical + surgical ENT training at Tufts Medical Center

Our residents gain comprehensive clinical and surgical experience across multiple top hospitals, including Tufts Medical Center, Boston Children’s Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital. This diverse exposure ensures hands-on learning in both adult and pediatric otolaryngology, covering a wide range of subspecialties such as head and neck oncology, facial plastics, otology, rhinology and laryngology.

The program emphasizes early operative experience and progressive responsibility, allowing residents to build confidence and develop advanced surgical skills throughout their five-year training. A dedicated research block during the third year offers protected time to pursue scholarly projects with mentorship from experienced faculty.

Residents also participate in multidisciplinary care teams that collaborate closely with other specialties, enhancing both clinical knowledge and patient care skills. This training approach prepares residents to excel in academic settings, competitive fellowships or independent practice.

Hands-on ENT clinical training across Boston + New England

Our residents gain hands-on experience with a wide range of adult and pediatric patients across Tufts Medical Center, Boston Children’s Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital. This mix of academic and community settings offers exposure to diverse populations, complex cases and varied practice environments.

You’ll rotate through every otolaryngology subspecialty—head and neck surgery, rhinology, otology, facial plastics, laryngology and pediatric ENT—with early time in the OR and growing responsibility each year. You’ll work closely with multidisciplinary teams, sharpen your surgical skills and build confidence in clinical decision-making. By graduation, you’ll be ready for fellowship or practice with deep experience and high surgical volume behind you.

PGY-1: Foundations in surgery + otolaryngology

You’ll spend six months with general surgery services—general surgery, SICU, plastics, neurosurgery, anesthesia and OMFS—and 6 months on ENT at Tufts Medical Center and Rhode Island Hospital/Hasbro Children’s Hospital. You’ll learn inpatient and outpatient care, assist in basic procedures and get early exposure to ENT cases. Most calls are in-house during surgery and home calls during ENT.

PGY-2: Junior resident experience

You’ll rotate at Tufts Medical Center, Boston Children’s and Rhode Island Hospital/Hasbro Children’s Hospital, performing common adult and pediatric procedures like endoscopy, myringotomy and tubes, tonsillectomy, sinus surgery, biopsies and basic mastoid work.

PGY-3: Mid-level resident + research

Rotations continue at Tufts Medical Center and Rhode Island Hospital/Hasbro Children’s Hospital, plus three months of protected research time. You’ll advance your surgical skills and take on your own academic project with close faculty support.

PGY-4: Senior resident leadership

This year includes time at Tufts Medical Center, ENT Specialists and Rhode Island Hospital/Hasbro Children’s Hospital. You’ll serve as acting chief at RIH, manage consults and call schedules and expand your experience in advanced subspecialty procedures.

PGY-5: Chief resident

Chiefs rotate again through Tufts Medical Center, ENT Specialists and Rhode Island Hospital/Hasbro Children’s Hospital. You’ll manage house staff, lead in the OR and take ownership of complex cases, including skull base surgery, free flaps, neurotology and advanced sinus and plastics.
