How to apply for the Tufts Medical Center psychiatry residency

Applications for the psychiatry residency program are submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), developed by the AAMC to securely transmit applications, letters of recommendation, dean’s letters, transcripts, and other supporting documents from applicants and medical schools to residency programs online.

Additional information for international applicants
  • International, Canadian, and osteopathic medical graduates should consult the ERAS website for specific application instructions.
  • Tufts Medical Center sponsors J-1 visas.
  • International medical graduates must be ECFMG certified before starting residency.
Other notes
  • There is no cutoff date for how many years have passed since medical school graduation.
  • While clinical experience in the United States is preferred, it is not required.

Psychiatry residency hospital partners expanding your clinical experience beyond Tufts Medical Center

In addition to Tufts Medical Center, our psychiatry residents train at several partner hospitals across Massachusetts. These diverse training sites allow for a broad, well-rounded clinical experience in a variety of settings and populations.

Tewksbury Hospital – Tewksbury, MA

This 350-bed state hospital includes seven inpatient units for medically complex adults and five units for psychiatric care. During the PGY-2 year, residents complete a two-month rotation on a psychiatric inpatient unit, gaining experience with treatment-resistant and chronically ill individuals through the Department of Mental Health.

Lawrence Memorial Hospital – Medford, MA

Part of MelroseWakefield Healthcare, this 134-bed community hospital is home to a well-established Geriatric Medical Psychiatric Program. Residents learn to care for older adults with acute psychiatric and medical needs, including those with dementia, depression, and psychosis. Services include inpatient and outpatient ECT, day programs, nursing home consultation, and more. The hospital is accessible by public transportation.

North Shore Medical Center – Salem, MA

This 20-bed inpatient unit specializes in psychiatric care for children and adolescents (ages 3–17). During the PGY-2 year, residents spend one month here, working alongside attendings and physician assistants to care for youth with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other behavioral health conditions.

Walden Behavioral Care – Waltham, MA

A leading program for the treatment of eating disorders, Walden offers inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient care. During the PGY-3 year, residents join the partial hospital team in Waltham, working closely with a psychiatrist and nurse practitioner who specialize in eating disorders.

Psychiatry Residency Program

Inpatient + outpatient psychiatry training at Tufts Medical Center in Boston

Our psychiatry residents train in a wide variety of clinical settings across Tufts Medical Center and our partner sites. You'll care for people of all ages and backgrounds, gaining experience with the full range of psychiatric conditions and treatment approaches.

Clinical training includes:

  • 6 months on our adult inpatient psychiatry unit
  • 4 months on the consult and liaison psychiatry service
  • 2 months in addiction psychiatry
  • Rotations in child and adolescent, geriatric, forensic and public psychiatry
  • Ongoing outpatient work starting in PGY-2, with a full outpatient focus in PGY-3 and PGY-4

You’ll manage your own panel of outpatient therapy and medication management cases, including long-term psychotherapy. Some residents follow their patients for up to 3 years, building strong therapeutic relationships and continuity of care.

We combine strong supervision with growing independence, helping you become a confident, capable psychiatrist. Our training prepares you for general practice, academic roles or fellowship in any subspecialty.

What kind of psychiatry training will I get at Tufts Medical Center?

At Tufts Medical Center, our psychiatry residency gives you the skills, support and experience to succeed in any area of adult psychiatry. You'll work across inpatient and outpatient settings, with training in addiction, consult and liaison, child and adolescent, geriatric, forensic and public psychiatry.

We offer a collaborative and inclusive environment where you’ll grow as a clinician and a leader. Our residents take on increasing responsibility as they advance, while building close relationships with faculty and peers. Leadership development is a key part of our program, and there are opportunities to mentor medical students and junior residents.

If you're planning to pursue a fellowship, including child and adolescent psychiatry, we’ll help you meet ABPN certification requirements during your residency. We also offer a Triple Board Residency Program for those interested in training in pediatrics, general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. Many of our graduates go on to fellowships and academic careers, fully prepared for the next step.
