Our 3-year clinical-research track prepares you for a future in academic medicine and clinical investigation. Funded by an institutional NIH T32 grant since 1999, this track combines outstanding nephrology training with advanced education in research design, methods and execution.
Fellows earn a master’s degree in Clinical and Translational Science from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Tufts University. Coursework includes:
- Statistics and epidemiology
- Clinical trial and observational study design
- Grant writing and research ethics
Electives tailored to your area of interest
Fellows also complete a thesis and conduct mentored research supported by a collaborative team that includes domain experts, process specialists and biostatisticians. Areas of research strength include:
- Cardiovascular disease in kidney disease
- Chronic kidney disease
- Clinical practice guidelines and implementation science
- Dialysis and kidney transplantation
- Glomerulonephritis, acute kidney injury and kidney stones
- Polycystic kidney disease and hypertension

Year 1: Clinical foundation
- 10 months of inpatient nephrology rotations
- 2 months of float/education block
- Weekly nephrology continuity clinics (2 half-days)
- Monthly home dialysis clinic
Years 2 and 3: Research immersion
- Coursework for the master’s degree
- Weekly nephrology continuity clinic (1 half-day)
- Longitudinal experience in chronic outpatient hemodialysis
