Application process + requirements

Applications to the program are invited from physicians who have completed an accredited three-year residency program in internal medicine in the United States.

The program welcomes qualified applicants with J-1 visa sponsorship through ECFMG. Other types of visas (e.g., H1-B) will be considered on a case-by-case basis and qualified applicants with these visas are encouraged to apply.

  1. An application through ERAS.
  2. Three letters of recommendation, including one from the Director of the Internal Medicine Training Program and one from an Endocrinology physician who knows the applicant well. In the evaluation process, we place more emphasis on letters from people who know the applicant well vs. from highly ranked staff. A fourth letter can be submitted, but only if it contributes something different.  Not infrequently, a fourth letter may not add value to the other three recommendation letters and adds 'noise' to the application.
  3. Scores from the USMLE Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3.

Incomplete applications (e.g., with only 2 letters of recommendation) will not be reviewed.

Any correspondence related to the application or inquiries about the program should be addressed to the Fellowship Coordinator.

We look forward to receiving your application.

Our process once applications are received

At the end of July (about 2 weeks after ERAS opens), the program director and associate program director review all completed applications. Qualified applications are distributed for detailed review among the selection committee. Based on the applicant's specific interests, applications are assigned to the most appropriate faculty member (e.g., an applicant with a research interest in diabetes will be assigned to a faculty member with a research program in diabetes).

All requested information must be available for review before the end of July to facilitate the review process.

Eligibility criteria

The program receives over 200 applications per year and offers interviews to only a handful of applicants.

Based on a holistic review of the application, anchored on attributes that make for a great physician, competencies, experience, and metrics, each faculty member provides a numerical score indicating a good match for the program.

The applicants with the highest average scores are invited for an interview.

  • Signaling: Applicants who have signaled interest in our program and met our selection criteria will receive preferential consideration for interviews. However, all candidates will undergo a thorough review and evaluation. We carefully assess every application, and signaling assists in our holistic review process.
  • Geographic preferences: Applicants who indicate a geographic preference and meet our selection criteria will be given preferential consideration. However, candidates without a geographic preference will also receive strong consideration.
  • Interviews: Interviews are scheduled in September and October. Invitations to interview are sent on a rolling basis from mid-August to mid-September.

Interview information

Traditionally, the visit and interview were conducted in person. However, the COVID-19 pandemic transformed the visit experience into a virtual one, and interviews have been conducted remotely. We have learned that most candidates preferred virtual visits and interviews but would also like the option for an in-person visit before making a decision. Every cycle, the program evaluates how visits and interviews will be conducted based on candidates' preferences and national recommendations from AAMC and ACGME.

For the application cycle starting in July 2025 (for fellows starting in July 2026), all applicants (including local applicants) will have their visits and interviews conducted remotely to ensure a unified process.

Interviews will be held on Friday afternoons from 12:30 PM – 4:30 PM in September and October.

The interview serves as an opportunity for the Program Faculty and the applicant to assess one another. During the interview, applicants will be evaluated based on their interest and aptitude for a career in endocrinology, professionalism, maturity, communication skills and motivation to pursue research and other scholarly interests.

  1. Applicants who accept the invitation will "visit" on a Friday, starting at noon.
  2. The Program Director or Associate Program Director will welcome the candidates and provide an overview of the Program through a slide presentation.
  3. Next, the Program Director or Associate Program Director, along with 2-3 other key faculty members, will conduct interviews with the applicants (up to 4 interviews per applicant).
  4. After the interviews, the applicants will meet with at least one current fellow in a virtual setting. This allows the applicants to discuss topics that they may not feel comfortable addressing during the formal interview with faculty.

In-person visits following the interview are permitted; however, these visits (and their outcomes) will not be considered in the selection committee's decision-making process. Applicants who visit may speak to the fellows but will not interact with the selection committee members.
