Training Experience

Hands-on Cardiovascular Fellowship experience at Tufts Medical Center

The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at Tufts Medical Center offers a comprehensive and immersive training experience, designed to develop well-rounded, clinically skilled, and compassionate cardiologists. Fellows are fully integrated into the Division of Cardiology and the CardioVascular Center, engaging in a variety of clinical, educational and research activities.

Core clinical rotations

Throughout the fellowship, trainees participate in diverse clinical rotations that provide exposure to both inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular care. These rotations include:

  • Advanced cardiac imaging (CT/MRI): Exposure to cutting-edge imaging modalities.
  • Cardiac catheterization: Hands-on experience with diagnostic and interventional procedures.
  • Cardiac intensive care: Management of critically ill cardiac patients.
  • Community cardiology: Engagement with diverse patient populations in community settings.
  • Echocardiography: Training in transthoracic and transesophageal imaging techniques.
  • Electrophysiology: Management of arrhythmias and device implantation.
  • Heart failure and transplantation: Comprehensive care for advanced heart failure patients, including transplant evaluations.
  • Nuclear cardiology: Utilization of nuclear imaging for cardiac assessments.
  • Preventive cardiology: Strategies for cardiovascular risk reduction and health promotion.
  • Vascular medicine: Diagnosis and treatment of peripheral vascular diseases.

Subspecialty training opportunities

After completing core rotations, fellows have the opportunity to pursue advanced training in subspecialty areas, including:

Affiliations

Our trainees spend the majority of their time at Tufts Medical Center. To complement this training, fellows spend time at MelroseWakefield Hospital and MetroWest Medical Center. During these rotations, fellows gain experience in consultative cardiology, critical care cardiology, non-invasive imaging and cardiac rehabilitation. Dedicated interventional and electrophysiology laboratory exposure is also provided to fellows during their community cardiology rotations. Teaching and supervision are performed by academically-trained and affiliated cardiologists, many of whom are trained at Tufts Medical Center.

Conferences + lectures

In addition to the individualized instruction given throughout each rotation, fellows are taught through didactic sessions, interactive conferences and self-study. The core curriculum includes a Fellows’ Conference, the Cardiology Division Conference, EKG Conference, Cath Lab Conference, Preventive Cardiology Conference, Cardiology Grand Rounds, Imaging Conference and Medical Grand Rounds. Additional conferences include a Morbidity/Mortality Conference, Research Methodology Conference, Heart Failure Research Conference and Electrophysiology Conference.

National + regional conferences

We strongly encourage fellows to participate in national and regional conferences throughout their training. Fellows regularly present case reports, abstracts, and original research at major cardiovascular meetings, including:

  • American College of Cardiology (ACC)
  • American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Heart Rhythm Society (HRS)
  • Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT)
  • Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA)

Fellows receive mentoring and guidance as they prepare submissions, and many are recognized nationally for their work. Travel support is often available for accepted presentations.

Resources for fellows

Our fellows have access to everything they need to succeed—clinically, academically and professionally. This includes a full range of inpatient and outpatient facilities, clinical and research labs, and dedicated educational spaces.

Key resources include:

  • The Naimi Fellowship Room – a centrally located, comfortable workspace reserved for fellows
  • Levine and Criscitiello Conference Rooms – recently renovated and equipped with state-of-the-art educational tools
  • Tufts University School of Medicine Library – full access to comprehensive medical and academic resources
  • Online learning tools – robust digital platforms to support ongoing education, board prep and research

These resources help our fellows thrive in a learning environment that supports collaboration, study and professional development.
