Anesthesiology Residency Program - About Our Program

About Our Program

Your path to anesthesiology excellence starts at Tufts Medical Center

The Anesthesiology Residency Program at Tufts Medical Center is a four-year, ACGME-accredited training program designed to prepare physicians for excellence in both private practice and academic medicine. Our residents graduate as confident, compassionate consultants with the clinical experience, knowledge and leadership skills to thrive in any setting.

Rooted in a mission of clinical + academic excellence

Our program is grounded in Tufts Medical Center’s long-standing commitment to education, research and patient care. We emphasize high-quality, person-centered training across a wide range of anesthetic subspecialties. Residents are not just trained to deliver care, but to think critically, work collaboratively and become active contributors to the academic mission of Tufts Medicine.

A strong foundation in year one

The PGY-1 clinical base year provides broad exposure to surgery, medicine, ENT, emergency care, critical care, pain management and foundational anesthesiology—laying the groundwork for advanced training. Rotations are carefully designed to build clinical judgment, foster interdisciplinary collaboration and help residents develop the habits and relationships that will support them throughout residency.

Hands-on learning with complex cases

Residents begin managing complex, high-acuity cases early in their training—including cardiac, obstetric, neuro, thoracic and vascular procedures. We believe that early exposure builds confidence and strengthens clinical decision-making. As residents advance, they revisit these subspecialties with greater independence and mastery. Hands-on learning is enhanced by structured simulation sessions, real-time feedback and opportunities to refine airway, regional and critical care skills in diverse clinical settings.

A medium-sized program with strong support

Our medium-sized residency offers the support of a tight-knit community within the infrastructure of a major academic medical center. Residents know their peers and faculty by name, receive individual mentorship and collaborate closely across all levels of training. This culture of approachability and mutual respect fosters open communication, professional growth and strong lifelong connections.

Comprehensive care in one academic center

One of our greatest strengths is the ability to offer adult, pediatric and obstetric anesthesia training—all within a single academic medical center. This ensures integrated, consistent exposure across specialties throughout training. By working closely with interdisciplinary teams and managing care across the full age and acuity spectrum, residents develop the confidence and adaptability to thrive in any clinical setting.

Graduates prepared to lead + advance care

Graduates from our program are board-ready, well-rounded anesthesiologists who succeed in a range of settings—from top academic hospitals to high-volume private practices. Many go on to pursue competitive fellowships across the country in cardiac, pediatric, critical care and pain medicine—including our own Adult Cardiac Anesthesiology and Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine. With a strong foundation in leadership, scholarship and collaboration, our alumni are prepared to shape the future of anesthesiology.
