We are excited to offer a new heart failure-critical care medicine training program! Given the increasing prevalence of cardiogenic shock and mechanical circulatory support in the CCU, caring for these patients requires expertise in both critical care to manage them acutely and advanced heart failure to know how to get them out of the CCU.
This new 2-year training program is designed for applicants desiring to build a career in cardiac critical care. Fellows will spend their first year focusing on advanced heart failure, gaining expertise with evaluating patients for heart transplant and LVAD in the inpatient and outpatient setting. During this year, they will have extra time dedicated to rounding in the CCU and cardiac surgery ICU, as well as attend special critical care didactic sessions. In the second year of the program, fellows will be immersed in critical care training to learn how to manage sedation and ventilators, how to treat acute complications of temporary MCS devices, how to manage the immediate postoperative cardiac surgery patient, and how to perform procedures like bronchoscopy and thoracentesis.
Interested fellows should apply to the Tufts MC Heart Failure fellowship through ERAS (ID 1592414029) but must be willing to commit to both years of training. Fellows will be board eligible in advanced heart failure at the conclusion of the first year of the program and board eligible in critical care medicine at the conclusion of the second year of the program, putting them in the ideal position to lead the CCU of the future.
Interventional Heart Failure
For fellows interested in complex coronary interventions in the sickest patients, understanding advanced hemodynamics, and practicing at the forefront of device-based therapies for patients with heart failure, we offer a 2-year training program in interventional heart failure. Trainees in this program would first complete a year of advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology with specific opportunities to focus on mechanical circulatory support decision making. Following completion of this year, they would enter a year of interventional cardiology training to hone their procedural skills and solidify their mastery of invasive hemodynamic assessments, coronary physiology and intervention, and mechanical circulatory support.
