How one estate gift keeps shaping patient care at MelroseWakefield Hospital.

Couple going over estate planning

When Georgina B. West established her estate gift, she had a clear purpose: to ensure that the hospital she cared about could acquire the medical equipment and supplies her community needed most. Decades later, the West Fund continues to honor that intention at MelroseWakefield Hospital. Each new investment stands as an expression of what lasting philanthropy can do.

"Georgina B. West's legacy is not just remembered, it is actively improving care," says Bill Wyman, President of MelroseWakefield Hospital. "That is the extraordinary potential of planned giving. It allows someone's values to continue shaping the health of a community long into the future."

The power of a planned gift

At MelroseWakefield Hospital, the West Fund has supported patient-care investments across multiple areas. In recent years, the fund helped support the renovation of the Maternity unit, improving the environment for patients and families during childbirth and postpartum care. It also equipped the Special Care Nursery with biomonitors. These devices track vital physiological data for neonatal patients, advancing the safety of newborns who require additional clinical attention.

Most recently, the West Fund helped purchase new electrophysiology technology that gives the cardiovascular team the tools to deliver sophisticated cardiac care close to home. For patients, that means less distance to travel at some of the most consequential moments of their care.

A legacy that keeps growing

For Bill Wyman, the West Fund is part of a larger story about how philanthropy shapes what a community hospital can offer.

Hospitals like MelroseWakefield have to keep evolving. Medicine changes, technology changes and community needs change. Philanthropy gives us the ability to respond to those needs in ways that may not always be possible through normal operations alone. It can help ensure that the hospital remains strong, relevant and capable of providing high-quality care for future generations.

Taken together, these investments tell a story about what estate gifts can become.

"A planned gift can outlive a single moment in time," says Bill Wyman. "It can continue to strengthen the hospital across generations, giving us the ability to make targeted investments that improve safety, quality, access and the patient experience."

From the birth of a child, to the careful monitoring of a vulnerable newborn, to advanced cardiac care without leaving the community, the West Fund has touched patients at some of the most significant moments of their lives. Each investment helps MelroseWakefield provide safer, more modern and more accessible care for the communities they serve. Its legacy grows project by project, a living testament to what one person's generosity can set in motion.
