Marifer’s Story: Reaching “One-Derland” With Tufts Medicine Weight + Wellness

May 19, 2025

Marifer lost over 100 lbs with support from Lowell General Hospital's Weight + Wellness program.

Marifer weight and wellness

Marifer Rojas was 22 years old and suffering from knee pain and high blood pressure. At 300 pounds, her weight was impacting her health and quality of life.

Determined to make a change, Marifer met with Lowell General Hospital’s Weight + Wellness team in Chelmsford and in August 2023 she had a sleeve gastrectomy surgery—a form of minimally invasive bariatric surgery.

Marifer is now off blood pressure medication and free of knee pain. She credits her team at Lowell General’s Weight + Wellness Program in Chelmsford for helping her succeed with ongoing support, counseling and practical guidance. Last December, she stepped on the scale and saw 199 pounds—what she calls “one-derland.”

I hadn’t seen a '1' in front of my weight in years. I cried—I was so proud.

Today, Marifer says her confidence is at an all-time high. She’s referred both her sisters to the program and urges others to consider their options.

“Yes, it’s hard work—but it’s so worth it. Your life can truly change.”
