Tufts Medical Center and Tufts University School of Medicine announced today that Jason Hall, MD, a colon and rectal surgeon and an internationally renowned expert in diverticular disease, has been named Surgeon-in-Chief and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Tufts Medical Center, and Professor of Surgery and Benjamin Andrews Chair of Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Jason Hall, MD, MPH

Dr. Hall assumed his new appointments on July 1, 2022.

"We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Hall to the Tufts family," said Helen Boucher, MD, Interim Dean at Tufts University School of Medicine and Chief Academic Officer for Tufts Medicine. "His considerable accomplishments in treating colorectal cancer and other gastrointestinal disorders—while maintaining his academic and research interests—demonstrate his commitment to both his patients and students. I have no doubt that he will be an exceptional addition to our team as a surgeon, educator and leader moving forward."

Dr. Hall previously served as Chief of the Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery in the Department of Surgery, Director of the Dempsey Center for Digestive Disorders at Boston Medical Center and Associate Chair of Faculty Development and Academic Affairs. In addition, he also held the title of Associate Professor of Surgery at Boston University School of Medicine and is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.

In his new roles, Dr. Hall will lead a growing department of surgeons that consists of seven divisions: Thoracic Surgery, Trauma Surgery and Emergency Surgical Services, Abdominal Transplant, Colorectal Surgery, Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery, Onco-Plastic Surgery and Surgical Oncology. He succeeds Michael Tarnoff, MD, who served as Surgeon-in-Chief and Chair from June 2019 to June 2021, before being named President and CEO of Tufts Medical Center.

"Dr. Hall is a tremendous physician, as evidenced by both his clinical and scholarly contributions to the surgical field," said Dr. Tarnoff. "We are extremely fortunate to have someone of his caliber heading our surgical team at Tufts Medical Center. Our patients and broader care team will benefit greatly from his leadership."

Dr. Hall was recently elected Vice President of the New England Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He also serves as an associate examiner for the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. In addition, Dr. Hall is the lead author on The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Treatment of Left-Sided Colonic Diverticulitis.

"I am thrilled to join an incredibly strong surgical department at Tufts Medical Center and Tufts University School of Medicine," said Dr. Hall. "It is an exciting opportunity to lead a talented group of surgeons with clearly evident skill and passion for patient care, as well as teach the next generation of world-class surgeons. I am energized by all we will be able to accomplish together moving forward."

Dr. Hall earned his BA in Chemistry from College of the Holy Cross, his MD from Harvard Medical School and MPH from Harvard School of Public Health. He has received fellowships from the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery (ASCRS) and has been recognized as one of Boston's "Top Doctors" by Boston magazine every year since 2016.
