Highest Patient Safety Rating - Grade A 2020

December 14, 2020

Tufts Medical Center is recognized with an ‘A’ Rating in the Fall 2020 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for meeting the highest patient safety standards.

Tufts Medical Center today was awarded an ‘A’ in the Fall 2020 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing Tufts MC’s achievements protecting patients from harm and meeting the highest patient safety standards in the United States. The ‘A’ grade is the highest designation bestowed by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization committed to healthcare quality and safety.

“We are extremely proud to receive an ‘A’ grade from Leapfrog, particularly given the current stress on the entire healthcare delivery system,” said Michael Tarnoff, MD, Interim President and CEO and Surgeon-in-Chief at Tufts Medical Center. “Achieving this recognition of high-quality, safe patient care in the middle of a pandemic is a true testament to the skill, dedication and commitment of our entire team.”

Developed under the guidance of a national Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals across the country twice per year. These measures – which include metrics on preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections - are vital to achieving the highest level of patient safety and satisfaction.

“This recognition is the culmination of hard work and laser focus from numerous people in a wide variety of areas across our organization,” said Saul Weingart, MD, PhD, Chief Medical Officer at Tufts Medical Center. “It is extremely gratifying to see our efforts to establish Tufts MC as a leader in patient safety have paid off with an ‘A’ rating from Leapfrog.”

Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public. To see Tufts MC’s full grade details and access patient tips for staying safe in the hospital, visit hospitalsafetygrade.org.
