Center for Weight Management + Bariatric Surgery Named Optum Center of Excellence

January 18, 2021

Health services leader Optum has named Lowell General Hospital’s Center for Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery a Resource Services Center of Excellence (COE) for providing cost-effective, quality health care to patients receiving bariatric surgery and other related services that address the long-term health risks associated with morbid obesity.

The Center for Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery received the Optum COE designation after completing a rigorous qualification process that took many factors into consideration, including a history of delivering excellent health outcomes as measured by fewer health complications, hospital readmissions and reoperation rates for bariatric procedures, among others, in a more cost-effective manner.

“We selected Lowell General because of its commitment to providing superior care to patients receiving bariatric services,” said Jon R. Friedman, M.D., chief medical officer at Optum for Medical Benefit Management. “We commend Lowell General for its excellence in providing the highest level of care for their patients.”

The Optum Bariatric Resource Services COE network includes more than 300 programs across the country that provide specialized bariatric nurse case managers who help patients manage co-morbid conditions and make lifestyle changes before and after surgery to encourage successful weight loss and improve the quality of life.
