As the New Year approaches, many of us think about how we can become the best versions of ourselves. While you contemplate a new exercise program, healthier eating, spending more friends or just turning off the news, here are 10 achievable things that you can do to take charge of your health in 2025.

  1. Schedule your cancer screenings: We know you’re not looking forward to that mammogram or colonoscopy, but regular screenings are the key to detecting many cancers early. Talk to your doctor about your risk based on your family history and lifestyle. If you’re at average risk, follow these guidelines when scheduling your screenings.
  2. Consider genetic testing: A genetic risk assessment can provide critical information for understanding your risk for developing diseases, including many cancers. Learn how genetic counselors can help guide you through the process.
  3. Get your hearing checked: Hearing loss can be gradual—you might find yourself cranking the volume on your TV or missing out on conversations. If you’re experiencing these or other signs of hearing loss, schedule a 30-minute hearing test.
  4. Check your skin for changes: Don’t be fooled by the grey skies. Check your skin for changes each month and schedule an annual full body skin check. And yes, you still need to wear sunscreen all year round!
  5. Name your health proxy: Don’t wait until a medical emergency to ensure you get the care you want. Name a healthcare proxy—a representative who you choose to make healthcare decisions for you if you are unable to communicate these yourself.
  6. Make that eye exam: Our eyes may or may not be the windows to our soul, but they can give us a lot of insight into our health. Make an annual eye exam part of your wellness plan.
  7. Stay safe from respiratory illnesses: Learn how you can protect yourself and the ones you love from the cold, flu and COVID-19 all year round.
  8. Know the signs of stroke: Stroke can affect people of any age, at any time. Know the signs of stroke and what to do if you experience symptoms.
  9. Get heart smart: Heart disease is a leading cause of death. Know the symptoms, risk factors and talk to your doctor about how you can keep your cholesterol and blood pressure at healthy levels.
  10. Find support for your weight loss journey: Our culture is filled with a lot of myths and unhelpful ideas about weight and health. If you’re struggling with your weight, learn how to get the support and tools you need to feel your best.
