Scoring categories: Diabetes related words section: 11 and below=inadequate health literacy, 12 and above indicates adequate health literacy. Numeracy/utilization section: 17 and below indicates marginal health literacy, 18 and above indicates adequate health literacy.

About the Validation of this Measure

Country where validated: South Korea
Content validity: The instrument was developed through literature reviews and interviews with experts. An initial pool of 299 items underwent pilot testing. Following item deletion and adaptation, a 65 item questionnaire was included in the validation survey. Following the survey, 7 items were deleted to produce the final 58 item tool.
Reliability (Cronbach Alpha): 0.83
Reliability notes: Cronbach's alpha for the overall scale was 0.83, for the numeracy and information utilization scale 0.83, and for the diabetes related words scale 0.92.
