Description

A self-report measure of certain health literacy constructs (ability to obtain, communicate, understand, and process health information) with adolescent populations. This measure is designed to be used in survey research to compare groups of adolescents. The scale items are located in the paper. You simply include the questions in a survey.

About the Validation of this Measure

Country where validated: United States of America
Content validity: 135 questions were developed addressing all four health literacy constructs. This list was then reviewed by two authors of the current study (a health literacy expert and a pediatrician). This review and further discussion by the team led to a final set of 62 scale items.
Reliability notes: Scale 1 (5-item communication scale): a=.77; Scale 2 (4-item Confusion scale): a= .73; Scale 3 (6-item Functional health literacy scale): a= .76
