Community Walks Program Aims to Improve Wellbeing of Boston's Public Housing Residents

The Community Walks clinical trial investigates the impact of adapting the environment within Boston’s public housing developments to promote physical activity.

The NIH-funded Community Walk program is implementing interventions in 12 of Boston’s public housing developments. Principal Investigator Lisa Quintiliani, PhD, leads a team of dedicated researchers who actively engage residents through environmental modifications, walking groups, indoor exercise sessions and conducting research assessments.

“The opportunity to work directly with community members, in their neighborhoods, is critical to our research,” says Dr. Quintiliani. “Bringing programs to the spaces where people live, and modifying them over time based on feedback we receive from community members, helps to ensure we are being consistent with the community's values and to build program longevity. We’re thrilled to partner with WalkMassachusetts and Boston Housing Authority (BHA) to advocate for safe and enjoyable places for physical activity.”

Community Walks team members and participants joined community leaders and residents of Jamaica Plain’s Mildred C. Hailey apartments to celebrate Unity Day on August 3—an annual event promoting healthy and thriving communities.
