Drs. Jeffrey Griffiths, Elena Naumova and Christine Wanke collaborate with Drs. Fernando Sempertegui, Bertha Estrella, and Josefina Egas in Quito to study the effects of vitamin A and/or zinc on pneumonia and diarrheal diseases such as cryptosporidiosis in malnourished Ecuadorian children with and without HIV infection. They also have studied the role of air pollution and malnutrition as factors in the development of pneumonia. These studies have been funded by the National Institutes of Health.
